Major Map Editor Updates

Start Creating

Hello friends! It’s time for another update, and it’s a big one! The map editor has received some major new features that allow you to create better-looking maps while maintaining the speed needed to modify your map during games.

Texture Blending This might seem like a small addition, but blending—specifically, fading out shapes—will make your maps look better than ever. No longer will you have hard, unrealistic edges between grass and roads, rivers, or any other elements you paint. Simply use the new slider to set the desired amount of fading. Don’t forget to set the outline to transparent!

Improved Textures I've improved most of the basic textures in Fey-Gate and added a few new ones. While you could always add your own custom textures, you can now build beautiful maps with the included textures right away.

Tree Tool Like the improved textures, the Tree Tool will make your life easier. You can now place different trees with varying sizes and rotations with just one click. Simply switch to “Decor Mode” (3) and use the new Tree Tool (T). There will likely be more tools like it in future updates, so if you have input, head over to our Discord and let us know.

Layer Improvements Layers have some new options too. They were initially used only to represent different levels in dungeons and buildings. However, with the new “always show” option, you can use them like in Photoshop or other tools. This feature provides an easier way to organize the different parts of your maps and allows you to decide the order of the elements more easily. Hover over the layer menu on the right and click the filled eye icon to always show a layer. You can also share it with your players or keep some surprises just for yourself.

Layer See-Through Since layers can now block all elements (including tokens) from layers below, I've added a new option that allows you to fade them out under your mouse cursor. This effect is perfect for layers containing trees or roofs of houses. To use this feature, hover over the layer menu on the right and click the fading circle icon.

Animated Images You can now drag & drop .gif files into Fey-Gate, and they will display their animations. Pro Tip: .webp also supports animation and has much smaller file sizes, so if you can get animated .webp files, they should perform better than .gifs.

Sharing Abilities Besides improvements to the map editor, I've also added a function to share a creature's (or player's) abilities with the click of a button. For D&D 5e, this works directly within the stat block by clicking the speech bubble icon when hovering over an ability. If you're using freeform stat blocks, you can wrap any text in the following code to achieve the same effect. :::shareable <your ability here> :::

Bug Fixes As always, there are a bunch of bug fixes! Counters should work more reliably now, copy-pasting text into text fields should work smoothly, and more.

I hope these new additions make Fey-Gate an even better tool for you. I’m looking forward to your feedback on our Discord!
